U.S.-market trucks only. The 5-speed H55F, diesel BJ/HJ60s and the high-roof wagons were never U.S. models. Figures carry a source tag; items flagged UNVERIFIED still have no reliable primary source after a search.

Overview & model years

The FJ60 replaced the FJ55 for the 1981 model year, with North American production from 8/1980 to 8/1987.[S7] Every U.S. FJ60 has the 2F carbureted six and a 4-speed manual; the H55F 5-speed was not offered in the U.S.[S7] Power steering and a tilt wheel were standard by 1987, with A/C and an Accessories Package optional.[S5]

For 1988 the FJ62 brought the 4.0 L 3F-E fuel-injected six (155 hp), the A440F electronically controlled 4-speed automatic (the only U.S. transmission), quad rectangular headlights, 4.11 gears, chrome wheels and bumpers as standard, and an optional Power Package. U.S. FJ62 production ran 8/1987–1/1990.[S4][S5][S7]

Wheel (lug) nuts, FJ60 No FJ60 figure found. The 1988 FJ62 manual notes the wheel-nut torque “has been changed” to 116 ft-lb, so earlier trucks used a different value UNVERIFIED

Always confirm torque values in the factory repair manual for your exact year and engine. Use a calibrated wrench; tighten wheel nuts in a star pattern and re-check after 50 miles. Values marked UNVERIFIED are commonly published figures we have not yet matched to a Toyota document.

How to read the code

Code position Letter = meaning
Prefix letter(s) Engine: F = F/2F/3F gasoline (B, H = diesels, not U.S.)[S7]
J Land Cruiser (“J” line)[S7]
Two digits Series: 40, 45, 55, 60, 62[S7]
After the series, first letter L = left-hand drive (R = right-hand drive)[S7]
After the series, second letter V = hardtop/van body, G = wagon/upper-grade wagon, P = pickup, none = soft top[S7]
After the dash: transmission none = 3-speed, K = 4-speed manual, M = 5-speed manual, P = 4-speed automatic[S7]
After the dash: rear door none = tailgate, C = swing-out (ambulance) doors[S7]
After the dash: grade / fuel N = GX/LX grade, E = EFI (as in FJ62LG-PNEA)[S7]
Last letter: market A = North America/USA, K = Canada[S7]
Other letters (e.g. the J in FJ40LV-KCJA) Not explained in any Toyota source we found UNVERIFIED

17-digit VIN

VIN position (1981 on) Meaning
1–3 JT3 = Toyota Motor Corp., Japan, multipurpose vehicle[S8]
4–7 Model, e.g. FJ60 / FJ62 (matches the model code)[S4]
8 Body letter, G on U.S. wagons (as in FJ60LG)[S7]
9 Check digit[S8]
10 Model year: B=1981, C=1982, D=1983, E=1984, F=1985, G=1986, H=1987, J=1988, K=1989, L=1990[S8]
11 Plant code[S8]
12–17 Serial number[S8]

Example from a U.S. 1988 FJ62: JT3FJ62GXJ0087206. The 1988 repair manual says the VIN is stamped on the cowl panel in the engine compartment and also on top of the instrument panel and the driver’s door post.[S4]

Build month/year is printed on the certification label on the driver’s door/pillar, and the paint (C/TR) code is on the firewall ID plate.[S7]
